Mrs. Kocher, school counselor, leads one of the book tastings at Towamensing Elementary School.

To celebrate Read Across America Week, 5th and 6th graders at Towamensing Elementary School (Palmerton Area School District) were treated to a variety of “book tastings.” Teachers, counselors and administrators served as guest readers for the book tastings. Students had the opportunity to rotate to several cafeteria tables to receive each tasting. During each tasting, students heard about 8-10 minutes of each guest reader’s book. Then on their “menu,” students wrote down their impression of the book. If it was a book they enjoyed, the students were then encouraged to get the book from the library so that they could read it in its entirety.

Younger students at Towamensing Elementary School also participated in several fun events for Read Across America Week. Kindergarten and 1st grade students listened to the story Swashby and the Sea and then created starfish rubbings that were shared on bulletin boards in the school. Students in 2nd grade heard the “Starfish Wish” poem, and then they wrote about their own wishes. After listening to the “Starfish Wish” poem, our 3rd and 4th graders wrote wishes for the Palmer House, a senior living community located in Palmerton.
