Accolades for AI innovation

An Upper Darby School District graduate is receiving national recognition for using technology to address real-world challenges.

Khandakar Mahin, a recent Upper Darby High School graduate, was honored at the White House as one of the winners of the inaugural Presidential AI Challenge for developing a proposal that uses artificial intelligence to help combat human trafficking. As first reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer in an article by Maddie Hanna, Mahin’s project uses computer vision technology to analyze details in photographs and match them to a database of hotels, potentially helping law enforcement identify locations connected to trafficking investigations.

Mahin’s achievement reflects years of academic excellence and leadership. While attending Upper Darby High School, he completed 16 Advanced Placement courses, earned numerous scholarships and awards, and served as a student representative on the school board. His interest in artificial intelligence began early and was fostered through opportunities to engage with emerging technologies and share his insights with both students and district leaders.

Mahin credits his teachers and mentors in the Upper Darby School District for helping him develop the research, communication and critical-thinking skills needed to pursue ambitious projects. District leaders praised his commitment to using technology for positive change and highlighted his involvement in improving his school and community.

This fall, Mahin plans to attend Harvard University, where he hopes to study political science and government while exploring ways to promote ethical and responsible AI policies. His recognition on the national stage serves as a powerful example of how Pennsylvania public schools help students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make meaningful contributions to society.
