Teacher in adaptive sports training
On January 20, during the staff in-service day, physical education teachers from across the district participated in training on adaptive sports equipment led by Envision Blind Sports. Wendy Fagan, the founder of Envision Blind Sports, generously volunteered her time to introduce a kit designed for students with visual impairments. The kit includes adapted sound-producing balls, running tethers and eye shades, enabling these students to participate in sports and activities alongside their sighted peers while promoting awareness of blind sports in public schools.
After the equipment was presented, physical education teachers learned how to play goalball, a team sport played in the Paralympic Games by visually impaired athletes. They also played adapted tennis, adapted soccer and learned how to use running tethers with a guide.
Ms. Jessica Sloan, Midwestern Intermediate Unit (MIU) IV teacher of the visually impaired, works with visually impaired students at Seneca Valley and received one of the adaptive sports kits provided by Envision Blind Sports. She plans to share the kit with physical education teachers throughout the year to support inclusive sports opportunities.
