Stories with the Supers wraps up at MTSD
Millcreek Township School District’s superintendent and assistant superintendent block time in their calendars to visit each of the five elementary schools during the school year. “Stories with the Supers” is an event that teachers are able to sign their classrooms up for as a special treat. Many elementary groups will combine all classes in a grade level for a mass story time in a shared space, so more students are able to enjoy the time together than just one class. During these special visits, they read to classes and engage with students, checking for understanding and giving students and teachers a short break for story time fun. The “Supers” ask the elementary students age-appropriate questions such as what they think is going to happen during the story, if they could rewrite the ending what would they write, what they thought of the story and more.
A particular favorite engagement is when they have the opportunity to read The Legend of Rock, Paper, and Scissors to students and the class gets to participate in an elimination-style tournament. After the reading, students are told to pair off, given directions on how the game should be played, and then play three rounds of rock, paper, scissors. Victors find a new partner with another victor and the others pick a victor to root for as the next rounds starts. This continues until there is one student left triumphant at the end. These visits have become a favorite for students and staff alike.
