Wilkes-Barre Area Creative and Performing Arts Academy expands

Chicago: Teen Edition
The Wilkes-Barre Area School District has been paving the way for the past seven years for students interested in the arts with their Creative and Performing Arts Academy (CAPAA). This unique program provides a specialized opportunity for theatre, music and art students to hone their skills and pursue their passions while receiving college and career preparation. What sets this initiative apart is that the curriculum is on par with that of a college-level program, and it is provided free of charge as part of their public education system.
This unique opportunity allows students to immerse themselves in a rich and comprehensive arts education, nurturing their talents and passion for creativity. CAPAA immerses students in their preferred arts discipline, alongside like-minded peers, teachers and mentors. The CAPAA program allows students to attend their core curriculum at their enrolled school for half the day and participate in their preferred arts discipline at the Creative and Performing Arts Academy during the other half. This vo-tech style program is open not only to Wilkes-Barre Area students but also to those from participating schools throughout Luzerne County.
CAPAA offers three tracks for students to specialize in: Music (Instrumental/Vocal), Theatre Arts and Visual Arts. With state funding, the program is expanding to accommodate nearly double the number of students compared to previous years. The district’s commitment to fostering artistic expression and development is commendable and will undoubtedly shape the future of many aspiring young artists. Superintendent Dr. Brian Costello and the Wilkes-Barre Area school board recognize the importance of the arts in education and are committed to providing students with a well-rounded learning experience through the arts.
