Turkey Bowl a reward for reading 600 books

On October 18, fifth grade students in Simmons Elementary School began the Fifth Grade Reading Challenge. Each of the five classes were tasked to read 50 books before November 24, to earn their spots to play in the Turkey Bowl.

“Our students have read more than 600 books, which has superseded our expectations,” said Dr. Robert Campman, assistant principal at Simmons Elementary School.

The goals of the reading challenge were to encourage students to foster a love for reading, create opportunities for students to talk about literature, and to promote the ideals of collaboration and fair play in athletic activities. The Turkey Bowl activity originates from a student favorite in physical education class called “Flicker Ball,” a combination of football and basketball. The pre-Thanksgiving game was held on November 24, at the Hatboro-Horsham School District’s football field. Mr. Moore’s class was the winning team!
