Transformation in the classroom

The Monarch life cycle, as viewed by our students

Our first grade classes had the opportunity to watch the absolute incredible transformation of several Very Hungry Caterpillars, that Eric Carle once taught many of us about. As these young, newly first grade students, had the chance to observe the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly they gained a fantastic hands-on lesson in science. Instead of only reading about in a book, students got to see the process unfolding. This makes the concepts of growth, change and metamorphosis real and memorable. First grade teacher, Mrs. Jamie Gross said, “We are able to incorporate rich literature, writing, math skills, fine motor, and art throughout our butterfly unit. We are also able to watch the changes daily which builds curiosity and patience.” It’s a great start to the year for these first graders, who are already beginning their journey of growth and transformation.
