The spirit of innovation, cooperation and service
As the leaves begin to change and the crisp autumn air sweeps through the Purchase Line School District, students are embracing the season with a vibrant array of activities and initiatives that highlight their creativity, teamwork and commitment to community service.
Students representing Purchase Line in the Students United Leadership Team (SULT) during the United Way’s Day of Caring on September 20 collaborated to repaint the Veteran’s Memorial in Starford and refresh the Starford Post Office Sign, demonstrating their commitment to enriching their local community.
One of the most exciting happenings this fall has been the innovative project from Mrs. Conrad’s and Mrs. Bish’s Advanced Literature 8 and Literature 8 classes. Students delved deep into their imaginations to prepare business plan presentations for technology-related inventions and innovations. Among the impressive projects, Addison Webster wowed her classmates with the “Bite and Bark Dog Walking Collar,” which integrates technology to enhance pet safety during walks. Meanwhile, Bryce Wolfe introduced the “Designer Sorter,” an imaginative solution aimed at revolutionizing how we categorize and sort items more efficiently. While at the elementary school, the 5th graders read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and then used the engineering design process to construct their own windmills out of recyclable materials.
In addition to these standout projects, the district’s extracurricular activities have continued to thrive. Fall sports wrapped up with exhilarating competitions, showcasing the talent and spirit of Purchase Line athletes. Elementary students recently focused on “synergy” as part of their lessons on the seven habits of effective people, promoting teamwork and collaboration in all they do.
In physical education, pre-K and kindergarten classes have been busy learning about scooter safety while engaging in various scooter movements. It’s a wonderful way for the youngest students to develop their coordination and safety awareness. First and second graders are currently focused on mastering fundamentals through fun and engaging activities designed to enhance their throwing and catching skills.
This fall has also been a fantastic opportunity for learning beyond the classroom walls. Gifted students and members of the senior Envirothon team embarked on a field trip to the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette, PA. This trip was aimed at educating students about wildlife conservation. Participants enjoyed a tour of the visitor center museum, viewed an insightful film on elk conservation, and engaged in hands-on activities that emphasized the importance of protecting our natural environment.
Additionally, creative expression was on full display during Band Buddy Day, where older students teamed up with younger musicians, fostering mentorship and musical growth. Speaking of community gatherings, Purchase Line proudly welcomed back alumni to celebrate the 1969 Appalachian Football Champions and 1969 Tri-County Cheerleading Champions on October 11, an event that wonderfully bridged past and present.
The Purchase Line School District also hosted a trunk or treat event, where families gathered for an evening filled with fun. This event was a safe and fun alternative to traditional trick-or-treating in which families, staff and organizations were invited to decorate their vehicles in festive Halloween themes, turning the parking lot into a vibrant and spooky scene. Children had the opportunity to collect treats from creatively themed trunks as they stroll through the lot, dressed in their favorite costumes.
As the autumn days grow shorter, the spirit of innovation, cooperation and service remains vibrant within the Purchase Line School District. This season not only showcases the talents and creativity of our students but also emphasizes the importance of giving back and staying connected to our community. Here’s to a fruitful fall filled with continued achievements and shared memories!
