Thanksgiving mugs show appreciation
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. contended, “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” With this goal in mind, Mrs. Kallis and her classes wanted to express gratitude for the teachers, staff and students at Oley Valley High School during this holiday season. Voluntarily, the students chose to purchase two mugs – one for a classmate and one for an adult who works in some compacity at the high school – and fill them with treats and trinkets. The only rule was that a mug had to be included with the gift, which allowed ample opportunity for creativity. Students filled the mugs with a tremendous variety of options – from succulents to candy to pens and even gift cards. Each student who opted to participate also received a mug in return. Prior to heading home to spend time with family and friends for Thanksgiving break, students delivered the mugs. The greatest satisfaction was witnessing the reactions of people when they received their gifts of appreciation. It was spectacular to behold the abundance of kindness. The motto “Everybody counts or nobody counts” supports the message of Dr. King. The holiday spirit within the Oley Valley High School community includes a commitment to unity and heartfelt support as well as a desire to promote intelligence coupled with character.
