Teacher takes students to the polls, virtually

Heights Murray fifth grade teacher Georgette Ferkel wanted to find a creative way to teacher her students about voting. So, she conducted a lesson while waiting in line to vote on Election Day. According to an article in the Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre School District is in full-remote mode due to rising COVID-19 cases in the area, so most of Ferkel’s students are taking classes live through Google Classroom. So Ferkel used her phone to connect with the students live while waiting to vote outside of the building. She talked through the process of voting and to illustrate the long line she was waiting in, she showed only the legs of those waiting in line for the sake of privacy.

The virtual visit was combined with a social studies project, said the Times Leader. Students were given a link to look up where they would vote if they could, and they also held a mock election and talked to the adults in their families about whether they voted and why.
