Superhero Day raises over $1,000 for Women’s Animal Center

Two brothers dressed up as “little Superman” Christopher Becker, the inspiration behind Superhero Day.

Mill Creek Elementary School students are superheroes to the animals at the Women’s Animal Center in Bensalem. They raised $1,018.72 to fund purchases of dog beds, scratching posts, and adoption fees for harder to place animals and elderly dogs and cats. To raise the money, Mill Creek Elementary School’s Student Council hosted Superhero Day on January 17, 2020.

Students and staff who donated $2 or more to the Women’s Animal Center could wear a superhero outfit to school. Popular costumes included Superman/woman, Batman/woman, Spiderman and Wonder Woman. Two brothers dressed up as “little Superman” Christopher Becker, the inspiration behind Superhero Day. Becker was an Emerson fifth grader who saved the lives of six children in 2015 when he passed away suddenly. Superhero Day began in 2015 in his honor and is always held the Friday before Martin Luther King Day.

During recess, the fourth grade Student Council members counted individual class collection envelopes and after school, the fifth grade members entered the amounts on a spreadsheet and prepared the deposit. The three top earning classrooms were Mrs. Benton’s kindergarten class ($86), Mrs. Barton’s and Mrs. McGuckin’s first grade inclusion class ($80) and Mrs. O’Neill’s first grade class ($62). They will all receive a visit from the Women’s Animal Center and furry friends.
