Summer Learning Academy engages students

Northern Lehigh School District’s six-week Summer Learning Program for grade K-8 was designed to provide students with an in-person learning experience to help them transition back to the classroom and catch up on any learning they may have missed last year. K-6 students had three hours of academics, an hour for lunch, plus one additional hour of specials. On Fridays an award ceremony was held to celebrate accomplishments such as effort and attendance. Grades 7-8 received instruction in English language arts, math, social studies and physical education. The district ended the program with a carnival.

Susan Beil, a summer learning program coordinator, said in an article in the Times News that one of the favorite hands-on lesson for students was MANGO Math (Measurement Algebraic Equations Numeration Geometry and Operations). Teachers used tools such as Scholastic Learning and Reading A-Z to print reading materials for the students to take home. Data collected during the program showed academic gains were made at every level.

Donors including King Spry, Giant Food Stores and Neffs National Bank made the summer program possible.
