Students support local mental health event

Several MAHS students volunteered at a local mental health awareness event.
This is the seventh year of this special fundraiser for suicide prevention and our NHS students were proud to volunteer for such an important cause. Volunteers include Abigail Ickes, Kaitlyn Hummelbaugh, Addison Ohler and Brooklynn Schafer.
Good Vibes – Saves Lives was held on Saturday, September 26 at the Laurel Arts Center. The event featured a Memorial Walk, live music, food trucks, luminaria and informational sessions. Representatives from community resources were on hand. The guest speaker for the event was Joshua Honer, known for his signature messages entitled “Build Your Fire” and “STAYINIT.”
Senior Addison Ohler said she was looking forward to volunteering at such an important event: “I want to help support an event that has a deeper meaning to it. This event may bring some awareness to suicide prevention that I want help spread.”
Abigail Ickes, also a senior, said she is honored to be able to volunteer for an event that addresses an issue that can and does affect people of all ages and backgrounds: “I have seen how mental health impacts people not only close to me but on a large scale, but more prominently I’ve seen how much the stigma of being perceived as less than healthy affects people. If there is any way for me to improve the idea of getting mental help I will personally take it, because you never truly know how your advocacy will influence others. A mental health crisis can happen to anyone so it should be acknowledged and treated appropriately by everyone.”
