STEM ‘cruise’ combines fun and learning
Laurel Highlands School District provided supplemental opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom, throughout the pandemic. The Mini Mighty Mustangs, a district initiative founded in 2015 with a focus on early childhood literacy in the local community, sponsored a STEM Cruise and Literacy Event for students in grades 3-5 and their families in the spring. Parents and students drove through the high school parking lot to watch demos of STEM activities, receive free books and pick up supplies to make the projects they watched. Participants were invited to share their finished projects on social media using the hashtag #MiniMightyEngineers. Pre-recordings of reading and STEM activities were also available on the district’s website. The event was also sponsored by United Way and Columbia Gas.
