The Chambersburg Area School District (CASD) launched a new initiative to enhance school safety through the introduction of a K-9 program. The program features Gunner, a rescued black Labrador trained as a narcotics detection dog and handled by CASD Police Officer William Confer.

Officer Confer, who joined CASD Police in 2020, volunteered to become the district’s first K-9 handler. Gunner was rescued and trained by Sector K9, a Texas-based foundation that transforms shelter dogs into detection dogs. Now nearly four years old, Gunner is certified to detect narcotics including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana.

Gunner’s primary role is prevention where his frequent presence in buildings serves as a powerful deterrent to keep our schools safe. The district also plans to expand his impact through outreach programs where students can learn about his training and duties in a positive, educational way.

The program has been made possible through community support. Local organizations have donated everything from a heat-sensor safety system in Gunner’s patrol vehicle, to food and medical care. This collaboration between the school district, police department and community showcases how shared resources can enhance student well-being and safety.
