Read Across Corry Title 1 Event
Friday, February 28, 2020, was a blustery, snowy day in Northwestern Pennsylvania. It was also the day that Corry Area Intermediate School participated in “Read Across Corry” (an event that coincides with NEA’s Read Across America). It was a day of celebration and reading that welcomed families to the school to join in the fun of a Dr.Seuss-themed day!
Read Across Corry is an event hosted by the district’s Title 1 team. The team at Corry Area Intermediate School includes Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Flook, Mrs. Goodwill, and Mrs. Wintemute; each Title 1 teacher planned events for the visiting families.
As the guests made their way through the school, they passed bulletin boards and classroom doors decorated in honor of Dr. Seuss’s stories. The third graders listened to Dr. Seuss’s stories, made Seuss-themed cootie catchers, and created their own Seuss-like characters with a story about each one. The fourth-grade students started with a Read Across America/Dr. Seuss escape room full of Dr. Seuss trivia and puzzles, and then played BINGO or Kahoot or shared their favorite books. Fifth grade spent their time playing “Minute to Win It” games like Ten Dice on Top Balance, Clover Over, Fish Go With the River Flow, Speak for the Trees, etc.
The feedback from the students and parents was incredibly positive. The families in attendance genuinely enjoyed spending time with their children. Most of the visitors left wishing for MORE time to read. At the end of the event, nineteen students were randomly chosen to win a hardback copy of a classic Dr. Seuss book to take home.
