Promoting literacy with ‘One School, One Book’

Community guest readers included Senator Maria Collett, State Representative Melissa Cerrato, Horsham Township Police, School Board Directors and Hatboro-Horsham School District Administrators.
To kick off the program, the school welcomed community guest readers, including Senator Maria Collett, State Representative Melissa Cerrato, Horsham Township Police, School Board Directors and Hatboro-Horsham School District Administrators. They read chapter one of this year’s book, “School Days According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney, to introduce the book and generate excitement. Each family will also receive a copy to read at home.
“This program encourages families to engage in a shared reading experience, and creates a stronger connection between home and school,” said Principal Dr. Elisha Gee.
Before visiting the classrooms, community members enjoyed cake and cupcakes to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Guests were also invited to wear the district’s mascot, the Hatter Top Hat, honoring the many hats worn by Dr. Seuss.
To bring the book’s main character into the classroom, Gee surprised students by introducing a real-life Humphrey the hamster. Students will share the responsibility of caring for Humphrey at school and taking him home over the weekends.
One School, One Book aligns with the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America mission to motivate children to read. To continue momentum throughout March, students can answer daily trivia questions, listen to their teachers and staff read aloud from the selected book, and participate in the shared class writing journal for reflection.
