Program puts learning loss in the past

Kiski Area School District (KASD) is using federal ESSER relief funds to provide enhanced learning experiences to students throughout the summer. The Go Cavs Summer Literacy & Math Camp was developed by Emily Mather, the newly hired Kiski Area director of curriculum and instruction. The free, monthlong program gives students a chance to focus on specific skills they may need help with as well as build social skills while school is on summer recess. The goal is to bring students up to grade level before the start of the school year.

According to an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, “Go Cavs” stands for “Great Opportunities for Children to Achieve Vital Skills.” Participating students were chosen based on student performance data and are benefitting from the individualized attention the program provides.

Later this summer the district will launch KASD STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts and Math), which will enroll students entering grades 5-6. A Kindercamp will also be provided for students entering kindergarten.
