After nearly eight years without a high school Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program, the Panther Valley School District brought it back in 2025, introducing six courses for grades 8-12. Students now have opportunities to develop practical skills in food preparation, child development, housing, and interior design as well as interpersonal communication.

“I applaud our administration for seeing the value in this program,” said Julian Costa, Panther Valley’s FCS teacher. “They realize that students need real skills in order to succeed after high school.”

Learning extends beyond the classroom through the Family and Consumer Sciences Club, where students explore interests ranging from cooking to sewing. Students have also volunteered at Pocono JuggleFest in March 2025 and March 2026, preparing food and staffing a refreshments stand.

The program encourages students to pursue leadership opportunities, too. New awards recognize academic and extracurricular achievement students in grades 8-12, and one Panther Valley senior co-presented at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Leadership Summit conference in Pittsburgh.

Supported by community partnerships, grants and an Occupational Advisory Committee, Panther Valley’s revived FCS program demonstrates how practical learning can prepare students for life beyond graduation.
