MTSD students place at PJAS State Competition

Students from Millcreek Township School District’s middle schools and high school competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science State Competition. At the high school level, eight students received a 1st award, one of the eight received a perfect score and one received a 2nd award. Three of those students received special awards including a scholarship to the Eberly School of Science at Penn State, the Directors Award for Senior High Excellence in Microbiology (PJAS) and Outstanding Senior Award from Pennsylvania Academy of Science Talent Search. At the middle school level, 14 students represented Walnut Creek Middle School and presented their research. Out of those 14 students, six earned 1st awards, six earned 2nd awards, and two earned 3rd awards.
PJAS is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, which is an affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The organization’s objectives are as follows:
• To promote greater participation in science and mathematics activities among the youth of Pennsylvania.
• To improve the quality of achievement in mathematics and science by encouraging students to participate in research and develop original ideas.
• To develop an understanding of the scientific community through close association with leaders in the sciences.
• To seek the improvement of science clubs activities through the cooperative regional and state meetings.
• To inculcate among its members true scientific attitudes and humanistic ideals that shall lead to the greater development of service to man.
The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) is a statewide organization of junior and senior high school students designed to stimulate and promote interest in science among its members through the development of research projects and investigations. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is divided into 12 PJAS regions. Each PJAS region consists of two or more counties.
