Students from the Meyersdale Middle and Elementary Schools recently attended the 37th Annual Somerset County Scrabble Tournament.

It was all “fun and games” for students competing in the 37th Annual Somerset County Scrabble Tournament on May 2! Hosted by the Stoystown Legion, this annual event featured elementary and middle schools teams from Meyersdale, North Star, Rockwood, Somerset and St. Peter’s Catholic School.

Meyersdale Elementary had four teams in the competition. Cay Helinski and Carrie Long serve as the teams’ coaches and are also members of the committee that organizes and hosts this special event. Teams included the following students: 4A – Liam Smith and Cameron Shultz; 4B – Lincoln Arnold and Gibson Hoover; 5C – Carter Bennett and Ashton Miller; and 5D – Ella Ferris and Colton Yommer.

The team of Carter Bennett and Ashton Miller won the fifth grade division five wins and just one loss. Miller and Bennett had a total point spread of 591 points over their opponents.

Meyersdale Middle School had five teams compete in the competition, under the guidance of Megan Edwards. Teams included: 6C – Jewelia Housel and Brinlee Lane; 6D – Allie Miller & Yelena Friend; 7C – Adalynn Smith and Aubree Kenner; 7D – Easton Dom and Jaxon Hetz; and 8C – Julian Valentine and Jayden Bockes.

The Somerset County Scrabble Tournament would not be possible without the dedicated corps of volunteers, the Somerset County Reading Association, who work tirelessly to put together this special event. In addition, sponsorships by the following businesses play an important role in providing food and prizes for the participants: Rockwood Casualty Insurance Company, Boswell American Legion Squadron 461, Daniel Woy Plumbing, Jeff Irwin, D.D.S., Dough Girls Cakes, Trackside Auto Shine, Sube Insurance, Peezer’s Pizza, Ron’s Collision Center, Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale Chiropractic, Shaffer’s Bottled Gas, Somerset Outdoor Equipment, Somerset Eagles FOE #1801, Somerset Trust Company, Stoner Furniture, Studio 7 School of Dance, Stoystown American Legion, Woy Brothers, Patriot Village and 4 Guys Fire Trucks.

Congratulations to all of our Red Raider wordsmiths!
