McDowell High School hosts first annual Military Signing Day

McDowell seniors participate in a symbolic signing day to celebrate their commitment to the United States Armed Forces.
McDowell High School hosted its first annual Military Signing Day to recognize 10 seniors who will be committing to service in the U.S. armed forces after graduation. The day was symbolic, but meant to give students the fanfare and opportunity to be celebrated in a similar fashion to athletic signing days. McDowell’s administration and guidance counselors felt it was a great way to recognize such an important life decision.
Students will be pursuing careers such as engineers, medics and infantry across the Air Force, Army, Army National Guard and Navy. One student was accepted to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, with what equates to a $300,000 scholarship over four years. An additional two students will be continuing service through ROTC programs at the universities they will be attending.
The celebration included the national anthem played on electric guitar by a fellow student, posting of the colors by McDowell’s AFJROTC Cadets, and congratulations from various representatives of the armed forces. The school is planning to make this an annual event to continue to recognize students committing to service after graduation.
