Lessons are growing in the edible schoolyard garden
The Lutz GROW (Gardening, Responsibility, Outdoor Wonder) edible schoolyard garden, located in the R. A. Lutz Elementary School courtyard, is taking shape as a vibrant outdoor classroom for students and teachers. Currently under construction, the garden includes a worm farm, composting station and raised planters filled with edible fruits, vegetables and pollinator-friendly plants. Planned future additions — such as a hydroponics system, rain barrels and irrigation — will further support sustainable gardening practices and year-round learning opportunities.
The garden is designed to promote healthy living, hands-on learning, a deeper connection to nature and a strong sense of community within our school. This project has been in the planning phase since last spring and is now coming to life thanks to a generous grant from the BWEF and the support of local organizations including Churchview Farm, Grow Pittsburgh and Hoff’s Seasonal Supplies. The raised beds were generously built and donated by Eagle Scout Hayden, whose craftsmanship provided the foundation for much of the planting space.
Third, fourth and fifth-grade students started seedlings in classroom windows and have now planted them in the garden, marking an exciting and meaningful milestone in this collaborative effort.
Throughout the process, we’ve had the privilege of working closely with Tara Rockacy, owner of Churchview Farm, located just down the road. Her expertise in sustainable agriculture has been an invaluable resource in shaping both the garden’s development and its educational impact.
We are thrilled to see the garden take root and grow, and we look forward to all the learning, growth and connections it will inspire in the seasons to come. A special thank you to Ms. Hustwit and all of the volunteers for your hard work!
