J.S. Wilson students use ‘Backyard Brains’ for interactive nervous system lesson

7th Grade students react to the Backyard Brains Human-to-Human Interface as they learn about the brain and nervous system.
Mrs. Giles and Mrs. Fuhrman teamed up to show seventh graders at J.S, Wilson Middle School how the nervous system works. Using the Backyard Brains Human-to-Human Interface, one student controlled another student’s arm using just their muscle signals. When one student flexes, this device picks up electrical signals in their muscles and sends them to a partner — making their partner’s hand move! This safe and interesting lesson helped students better understand how the brain sends its unique messages through the nerves and into muscles.
