Innovative Learning in Perkiomen Valley

Perkiomen Valley School District is redefining education by integrating innovative teaching and learning experiences that empower students. In Perkiomen Valley, “doing school differently” means giving students more voice and choice in their educational journey, offering new and diverse courses at the high school level, and fostering an environment where students can understand their strengths as learners and pursue success on their own terms.

One standout initiative is the district’s eSports team, now in its second year, spearheaded by Chief Information Officer Mr. Karthik Ganesh. This team provides students with the opportunity to develop critical thinking, coordination, problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills while competing in video game challenges. These skills are not only essential for academic success but also highly valued in the workplace and in everyday life. Moreover, students can access a variety of scholarship opportunities by honing these “video game playing” skills.

Another innovative program at Perkiomen Valley High School is the Viking Genius Bar, which offers districtwide support for technology devices, particularly the 5,000 Chromebooks and computers used by students and staff across the district’s seven schools. Managed by students enrolled in the Viking Genius Bar course, these “Geniuses” gain hands-on experience with the intricate operations of technology resources. Their efforts have significantly reduced the need for warranties on Chromebooks and lowered the costs associated with these devices, all while providing essential tech support to the entire district.

Nova Lab is another exemplary course that introduces students to large-scale problem-solving through project-based learning. In this course, students tackle community-based challenges or broader societal issues, such as reducing hunger, combating bullying or increasing voter awareness among young people. With no textbook, students rely on real-world examples, data and experiences to drive their projects, all aimed at making the world a better place. Mr. Gary Heidt, the course instructor, is committed to incorporating student voice and choice in the learning process and staying current with the latest software and apps that enhance the educational experience.

Perkiomen Valley High School graduates leave with a wealth of experiences and skills that distinguish them from their peers. They are engaged and motivated because their learning is closely connected to their interests and real-world applications, preparing them for success in whatever path they choose.
