Illustrating the capability of AI
Fourth graders at R. A. Lutz Elementary in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District have been actively engaged in a unique cross-curricular project that brought together InnovateLab and art class. Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Palumbo collaborated to design a meaningful and creative learning experience that students thoroughly enjoyed.
In InnovateLab, students were introduced to generative AI — a type of artificial intelligence that can assist in creating original content such as pictures and stories. Working in small groups, students applied their new knowledge by writing imaginative short stories.
Building on this work, students then transitioned to art class, where Miss Palumbo guided them in using a safe AI tool called MagicSchool to generate illustrations that complemented their narratives. Students applied their knowledge of famous art styles to give their illustrations a clear artistic voice. The final product: beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully written storybooks, showcasing both creativity and collaboration.
Students were thrilled to share their completed books with one another and took great pride in their accomplishments. We encourage you to ask a fourth grader about their story — they’ll be delighted to tell you all about it!
