Rowan Elementary Compost Ambassadors

Students at Rowan Elementary School are developing upon their sustainability efforts through the school’s composting program. Collecting food scraps from lunch, second grade Compost Ambassadors are pictured here adding their first collection to the compost bins.

Rowan Elementary teachers Ms. Angela Cardillo and (now retired) Ms. Jennifer Fiscus launched the Composting Program in 2021. Since then, the school’s Green Team has expanded the program and built a Learning Garden, where students can deepen their understanding of planting and the benefits of composting.

What began with just two classes now involves all grades K-4! The compost collected is put to good use, enriching the soil in garden boxes and supporting a sustainable learning environment for students.
