Governor Mifflin School District offers a window into education at the Mustang Nation Learning Expo
Hundreds of parents, community members, business owners and local officials descended on Governor Mifflin School District’s secondary campus on Thursday, March 27 for a firsthand look at what students in the district are learning at the 3rd Annual Mustang Nation Learning Expo.
The event, which promised attendees a look at “learning in action,” brings together students and staff from all six of the district’s schools to showcase their favorite lessons and activities. This year marked the biggest Expo in the event’s history, boasting 80+ student and teacher run exhibitions ranging from pre-K through 12th grade covering topics in STEM, language arts, music, business management, history, family and consumer sciences, and more.
Popular exhibits included an interactive bocce demo guided by the district’s Unified Bocce team, metal and woodworking demonstrations, live musical performances, literacy activity stations, and pop-up shops hosted by the district’s several student-run businesses.
In addition to providing a window into education in the district, the Mustang Nation Learning Expo offers attendees an insight into the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. Exhibits for the evening were divided into four quadrants representing the four aspects of the district’s Portrait of a Graduate: Community-Centered, Empowered Leader, Future Ready and Lifelong Learning. Attendees were encouraged to visit all four areas throughout the evening and ask students and staff how their exhibit related to their corresponding area of the Portrait of a Graduate. Attendees who completed this task received a prize, as well as a better understanding of the concept and the traits the district expects to see within each graduate.
“The Mustang Nation Learning Expo showcases students as they connect their learning to real-world experiences,” said Dr. Lisa Hess, superintendent of the Governor Mifflin School District.
“From kindergarteners practicing morning yoga to sixth graders analyzing state standards, each student takes center stage. Passionate young minds teach about penguin loyalty, advocate for sustainability and share hands-on projects — leaving the entire community and district beaming with pride,” said Hess.
