Two students cut “ribbons” in front of their fictional business storefront in Brecknock Elementary’s library.

Ribbons were cut and entrepreneurial endeavors were unveiled at the Brecknock Business Symposium. This annual event partners our fourth-grade students with local businesses to learn about their industry, the different career paths available in their industry, the various areas of expertise needed to run their business and their businesses’ impact on our local community.

After researching their classes assigned business, the students get to work on creating a mock business within their classroom inspired by what they have learned through the partnership. These businesses are then added to the fictionalized business hub of Sweet Read City, based out of the Brecknock Elementary library and officially unveiled at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, followed by an Open House for families, staff and business owners.

The 2025 student businesses were modeled after four Berks County-based businesses: Schlouch Incorporated, LedgeRock Golf Club, Classic Harley-Davidson, Goodwill Keystone Area and East Penn Manufacturing Co.

This opportunity is facilitated by Brecknock Elementary’s fourth grade team and local business owners. It is led by Brecknock Elementary librarian, Mrs. Rachel Sebastian. “Experiences like the business symposium not only provide immersive, real world learning but also nurture innovative, community-minded solutions,” Sebastian said.
