Envirothon team advances to state competition

The “Fuzzy Ducklings” have advanced to state competition after capturing the Somerset County Envirothon title.5

The MAHS Envirothon program continues to soar after capturing top honors at the 2025 Somerset County Envirothon Competition on April 29!

The “Fuzzy Ducklings” team took first place at the annual event and have qualified for the state competition in May. “The Fuzzy Ducklings” include the talents and skills of Maria Housel, Madison Hummelbaugh, Amber Long, Emilee Stewart and Levi Stewart. Each team competes in five stations that test their knowledge in Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, Forestry and Renewable Energy. “The Fuzzy Ducklings” earned the top score in the Aquatics division.

A second Meyersdale team, “The Roaring Bobcats,” placed fourth in the competition that featured teams from Meyersdale, Somerset, Berlin, Rockwood, Shade, Shanksville, Somerset, Somerset Technology Center and Windber. “The Roaring Bobcats” team includes Jaylynn Anderson, Kassidy Penrose, Sam Mason, Cassandra Thomas and Leoanca Fazenbaker.

Tom Miller, who serves as the Envirothon coach, said, “I am extremely proud of this group of students. They all worked really hard and put in a lot of time to prepare for the competition this year. Our seniors ended on a high note, they represented Meyersdale well and I will miss them tremendously next year!”

Envirothon members meet several times a week during PLT to prepare for the competition. The organization boasts 18 dedicated members. In addition to “The Fuzzy Ducklings” and “The Roaring Bobcats,” the club also has an “Observation Team,” which includes Romeo Parada, Hailey Robertson, Cullen Clark, Dylan Fochtman and Kalli Kimble.

“The Fuzzy Ducklings” will be attending the 2025 Pennsylvania Envirothon on May 21 at Windber Park.
