Educational endeavors

Visit to Chatham University
On Monday, March 3, about 50 sophomores from Ms. Michele Russo’s English class, along with gifted students from Mr. Greg Smolinski’s class attended a field trip to Chatham University, where they gained deeper insight into how various groups unite to create meaningful change.
Students toured the “Revolving Doors” Holocaust Exhibit with the Director of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, Emily Loeb. Mrs. Loeb also shared a powerful personal connection, speaking about her uncle, Rabbi Everett Gendler, who knew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and joined him in Selma in March 1965.
Additionally, students met Marcel Walker, the project coordinator, lead artist and book designer for ChutzPow!, a comic book highlighting the heroic stories of Holocaust survivors. Having studied the comic in class for research, students gained deeper insight as Mr. Walker discussed the power of storytelling through comics.
This impactful educational trip was sponsored by the Leadership through Innovation in Genocide and Human Rights Teaching (LIGHT) Initiative, a program dedicated to inspiring, preparing and empowering the next generation of humanitarians.
