District honors veterans in a new way
The Annual Shippensburg Area Senior High School (SASHS) Veterans Day Celebration was cancelled this year because of COVID-19 limitations. But school staff and students are not letting the occasion pass by unmarked. Instead of the usual breakfast and ceremony honoring veterans, the school delivered colorful yard signs to all 300 veterans who had attended the breakfast in years past, thanking them for their service. The Shippensburg News-Chronicle said members of the National Honor Society and Key Club, along with social studies teacher Virginia “Ginny” Lopez, wanted them to know they had not been forgotten on this Veterans Day, despite limitations presented by the pandemic. A PowerPoint presentation that honors all Veterans lost in the past year is usually shown at the breakfast and will be available for viewing on the district’s website this year.
The public was invited to purchase additional signs, the proceeds from which would go to fund next year’s annual celebration. Sponsors for this year’s signage were included Shippensburg Area School District, Volvo CE, Fisher’s Florist, Kiwanis International and Erie Insurance (Cramer Insurance).
