Seneca Valley students in grades 9–12 recently had the unique opportunity to hear from award-winning actress and vocalist Tamara Tunie during a special in-school program. On Friday, April 17, the SV Senior High School Auditorium was filled with students eager to hear from a professional who has navigated the heights of Broadway, film and television.

A native of Homestead, Pennsylvania, Ms. Tunie earned her Bachelor of Arts from Carnegie Mellon University in 1981 and has built an accomplished career across stage, film and television. Her work includes performances on Broadway and notable roles in Flight, Blue Bloods, The Devil’s Advocate, Snake Eyes, Wall Street, Beyond the Gates, Law & Order, As the World Turns and many more.

Currently serving as an artist in residence at the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG) in Pittsburgh, Ms. Tunie graciously visited Seneca Valley to share her talents, personal stories and professional journey. Her visit held special significance for students involved in the Performing Arts and those pursuing the SV Career Pathway in Arts, Communication and Media.

During the program, students gained insight into Ms. Tunie’s life, training and rise in the entertainment industry. Students especially enjoyed Ms. Tunie’s powerful monologue centered on themes of perseverance and overcoming adversity in the entertainment industry.

“It was an amazing experience getting to meet someone who even my mother has been watching and just hearing her story that inspires so many people,” said SV student Wynn Level.

Concluding the program, Ms. Tunie participated in a dynamic Q&A session, providing an engaging experience that offered valuable perspective and encouraged students to explore their own creative paths.

“It was such a pleasure hearing Ms. Tunie speak to us,” said student Hope Reep. “She is such an incredible performer, and it was an honor to meet her.”

The impact of Ms. Tunie’s visit was immediate, with many attendees citing her “trailblazing” spirit as a major inspiration.

“She is truly inspiring,” added Julia Brisco. “I think she has re-awakened my passion for theatre and film.”

We extend our deepest thanks to Tamara Tunie, Mark Jackovic (SV Artist in Residence and MCG Education and Archives Manger), and MCG Jazz for making this incredible opportunity possible for the SV community.
