Artist in residence

DJ M. recently immortalized one his favorite teachers by creating a cartoon likeness of Mrs. Kim Berkley.
DJ M. has demonstrated a love for art and a deep and abiding pride in being a Red Raider since he was a youngster. He has often agreed to create special projects with enthusiasm and talent that is truly a gift. “There are many artists in my family, so art comes naturally to me, it’s in my genes! Also, I love to draw for fun everyday. It makes me who I am,” DJ explained.
Several weeks ago, a request was made for DJ to immortalize Mrs. Kim Berkley as a cartoon for an honor she earned through a local television station. DJ immediately accepted the challenge and created a remarkable cartoon likeness that showcases his talents for truly “seeing” his subjects.
“Mrs. Berkley is awesome because she is so happy, kind and caring. She loves her job, her students love her and she supports the Red Raiders,” he explained. “I like drawing cartoons because realistic drawings are harder for me. Cartoons can be so colorful and that’s the way I like to see things. Plus, cartooning is more creative than drawing something realistic. I’m able to add my own style.”
Art teacher Joann Bolden has unique insight into DJ’s passion for art. As his aunt and teacher, she has watched DJ’s talents grow and improve with each passing year and project.“DJ is very willing to do cartoons when asked to do so. Most of the time he needs a day to think about it and then he is good to go. While pictures help DJ to fine tune details, he always puts his own spin on the drawing,” Bolden explained. “DJ amazes me with his focus and drive to draw. I think that many times he forgets that the rest of us are in the room! He draws constantly and doesn’t ever seem to run out of ideas as to what to draw. It is fascinating to watch him and the fluidity in which he works.”
DJ was proud to present his latest piece to his muse and was thrilled with Berkley’s response to his cartoon!
