Walnut Creek students kick off school with a book tasting

Mrs. Morey explains to her first period class what the Book Tasting is and how they will use their reading lists throughout the school year.
Mrs. Morey’s eighth grade students dove into English Language Arts (ELA) with a “book tasting” on the first day of school. Students took time to explore books in different genres and curate a reading list for the school year. The reading list will be used throughout the class for various projects, lessons, and to fill downtime when they’ve completed their work for the day. When asked why they start this activity right away, Mrs. Morey said, “I’m a firm believer that whatever you emphasize/prioritize on the first day is what sticks the most with students. Students read independently in my class every day, so reading is definitely a day one priority!”
Students will be expected to finish a book about every three weeks and keep track of their reading using a bookmark log. For every bookmark log turned in, they can earn extra credit and potentially earn rewards in class if they are one of the top readers for the quarter.
