All aboard for bus safety

Mrs. Nelson meeting with one kindergarten class on the school bus at Biglerville Elementary School.

Kindergarten students at Biglerville Elementary took a special trip — not across town, but just out to the school’s parking lot, where a school bus was waiting. In a fun and educational activity, students climbed aboard a real school bus parked at the school to learn the important rules of bus safety through hands-on experience.

The initiative is part of the school’s effort to ensure even its youngest students feel confident and secure when riding the bus and to create a safer experience for all of their bus riders.

Led by the assistant principal, Jennifer Nelson, students practiced lining up safely, boarding the bus, and walking to their seats. Once inside, they practiced the proper way to stay seated, keep their hands to themselves, and use quiet voices with their seat partners. Outside the bus students reviewed the “danger zone” around the bus and how to avoid that area as they enter and exit the bus.

Upon dismissal from school, one bus driver shared how excited her kindergarten students were about the bus safety talk they had on the bus during the school day. The school’s goal is that this safety review and practice carry over to students who feel better prepared and safe riding the school bus.
