Zoo in the Classroom program at Canon-McMillan High School

Zoo in the Classroom is an educational program developed by Canon-McMillan High School science teacher Chelsea Geist where her students take on the role of teachers, sharing live animals to elementary students to educate about wildlife, ecosystems and animal care. This program is designed to spark curiosity and a love for science at an early age by offering hands-on, interactive experiences that go beyond textbooks. Elementary students get the opportunity to observe and gently handle animals such as invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals, while learning important concepts such as habitat, adaptation and conservation in a fun, engaging way.

For the high school students, Zoo in the Classroom provides a chance to deepen their understanding of biology and ecology while developing leadership, communication and teaching skills. Students are trained in animal handling, safety procedures and public speaking before they give presentations. This dual-benefit structure helps create a unique and memorable learning experience for both age groups. Elementary students are inspired by older peers, while high schoolers gain confidence and practical experience that can support future studies or careers in science, education or veterinary fields.
