McDowell students learn welding with virtual tools

A McDowell High School student practices skills on a virtual welder during welding class.
McDowell High School students have the unique opportunity to use virtual welders before trying the real tools out in class.
At the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, the high school brought in three new virtual welders for students to practice their skills on. These tools have become an important component for the welding classes as it allows students to make mistakes and learn in a safer environment before taking on the actual welding tools.
The virtual welders have also helped students learn while limiting waste and material costs for the class, which has allowed students to do more with the materials they have. Students have been excited to share that the virtual welders are very accurate and similar to what they experience when actually welding, so they feel the virtual tools are invaluable practice.
Welding is one of many technology education classes offered in the high school to help students explore trades and various career options before graduation and without having to commit to a career path in a trade school.
