Windber Area School District earns Purple Star Schools Designation
Windber Area School District has been named a Purple Star School by the Pennsylvania Department of Education — one of only nine schools in the commonwealth to receive this prestigious designation.
The Purple Star School Program, established under Act 69 of 2022, recognizes schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting military-connected children as they transition to new schools due to a parent’s change in duty station. This designation reflects our district’s dedication to serving active-duty military families and students, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported throughout their educational journey.
On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, members of the Windber administration, school board member Mark Portante and local veterans traveled to the Pennsylvania State Capitol to be formally recognized on the House Floor for this distinction by Representative Jim Rigby. We are incredibly grateful for Representative Rigby’s time, kindness, and unwavering commitment to our community and veterans. His recognition of our district’s efforts is a testament to the importance of providing stability and support for military families in Pennsylvania.
This designation is not just an achievement for our district — it is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to honoring and supporting those who serve our country. Thank you to our students, staff, families and community members who continue to make Windber a welcoming place for all.
