What does the Pledge of Allegiance mean to me?

In the heart of Muhlenberg School District, ANDI: Americanism, Nationalism and Democratic Initiatives is a set of civic values that are woven through the culture of our school district, coming to life daily. From the classroom to the playground, teachers and staff make ANDI’s principles part of each student’s experience, shaping them into engaged, thoughtful citizens.

Each morning, students start their day with the Pledge of Allegiance, along with a morning meeting. Each school day, students and staff discuss current events, learn about historical moments that shaped the nation, and even tackle simple questions about what it means to be a responsible, active citizen. Teachers guide them through respectful debates, allowing them to hear different perspectives and learn the value of democratic dialogue.

In history and social studies classes, the curriculum has been updated to explore stories of influential leaders and pivotal events, showing students not only the “what” of American history but also the “why” behind national values and ideals. Younger students might study a story about the bravery of Rosa Parks or the compassion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while older students dive into the deeper discussions on the Constitution, the Bill or Rights and what these mean for citizens today. These civic values culminate to a course that all students are enrolled in their senior year.

The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, structure and functions of the American political system. It explores the foundational elements of citizenship, including the practice of democracy. Students will develop skills to be informed and engaged citizens of the United States of America.
