Strath Haven marching band: A legacy of inclusivity and excellence

Strath Haven High School is home to one of the most extraordinary high school marching bands in the nation. Known as “The World-Famous Strath Haven Marching Band,” this ensemble represents the heart of Panther pride, blending tradition, inclusivity and musical excellence.
With nearly 400 members each year, the band is the largest in Pennsylvania and the second largest in the United States. Remarkably, one-third of Strath Haven’s student body participates, making the band a unifying force within the school. Every student is welcome, regardless of musical experience. This inclusivity means that even those with no prior knowledge of instruments or performance can join and thrive as part of this dynamic group.
The band’s performances are a highlight of the school year, ranging from Friday night football games to community parades and prestigious appearances such as halftime shows for the Philadelphia Eagles. Their repertoire is ever-evolving, showcasing creative choreography and stirring music that captivates audiences locally and beyond.
A cornerstone of the band’s success is its ability to integrate seamlessly with other student activities. Strath Haven students can participate fully in the band while engaging in athletics, theater or other extracurriculars, thanks to carefully coordinated schedules. This flexibility ensures students don’t have to choose between passions, creating a vibrant, well-rounded high school experience.
The marching band’s ethos was shaped by the late Jack Hontz, the founder and director who led the group for 34 years. Hontz’s vision of “a place for everyone” continues to resonate today. His legacy lives on under the guidance of dedicated faculty and staff who prioritize student development, not just in music but also in leadership, teamwork and time management.
Strath Haven’s marching band is also a source of pride for the Wallingford-Swarthmore community. Parents, alumni and community members rally to support the band, whether by attending performances, volunteering behind the scenes or simply celebrating the group’s accomplishments.
