Members of the MAHS SADD Chapter attended a recent fall conference focusing on mental health and substance abuse.

The Meyersdale Area High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) was well-represented at the 2024 Fall Somerset County SADD Conference On November 12. Hosted by the Somerset County Technology Center, the event welcomed clubs from throughout Somerset County. The goal of the program was to provide clubs with an opportunity to network and gain knowledge and information on programs that can assist the mental health needs of students throughout the region.

The following MAHS SADD members were in attendance: Ashley Miller, Lilly Moore, Destinne Manuel, Kylee Haer, Kyleigh Blough, Kaitlyn Hummelbaugh, Lily Hardy, Kendell Donaldson, Emily Broadwater and Kaydence Smith. Estella Friend and Trinity Hoover were also in attendance as dual members of the MAHS and SCTC Clubs.

Advisor Liz McClintock and her members enjoyed a variety of speakers and presentations that focused on the ever-changing landscape of substance use disorders. Topics included the dangers of vaping, marijuana and alcohol. In addition, students participated in break-out sessions that focused on mental health and mindfulness, the impact of social media on teens and the consequences of using illegal drugs.

Students were challenged to consider service projects they can implement within their home districts to improve mental wellness for their classmates, while emphasizing the serious and lasting dangers of drug and alcohol.

MAHS members left the conference with new ideas and programs they plan to introduce in the coming weeks and months.
