NHS chapter receives Service of Excellence Award

Truman’s NHS chapter collected sports equipment for Leveling the Playing Field last school year.

The National Honor Society (NHS) awarded Harry S. Truman High School’s chapter with the Service of Excellence Award, granted to chapters making a significant imprint on their community through service projects and activities.

“I am so proud of our chapter officers from last year. They wrote the essays that gave us this award recognition,” said Elizabeth Gregory, Spanish teacher and faculty advisor for Truman’s NHS chapter. “Our chapter completed hundreds of hours of service work in and around the district, the community and the Philadelphia region.”

Each student must complete 20 hours of individual service work plus group service projects. For this school year, Gregory says they have a full list of service projects to start on, including a cultural exchange with The Rise and Shine School in Pakistan through Global Classroom Connect. At Truman, NHS will volunteer to host a Unified Track Meet in the high school’s stadium. They will also partner with Cradles to Crayons for their regional donation drive, and students are planning on something to help veterans, too.

In November, Truman will hold an NHS ceremony to induct new juniors and seniors into the chapter. To be eligible, students must have a cumulative GPA of 90% or higher.
