Read with a Red Raider welcomed more than 60 elementary students for their annual literary “game-day.”

They say the third time’s a charm and it certainly proved true for the return of the popular Read with a Raider program! This year’s “literary” touchdown was held September 4 at the football stadium.

Hosted by members of the Red Raider Football team and cheer squad, this special event welcomed more than 60 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Organizers also welcomed students from Turkeyfoot and Salisbury.

Student athletes read books to students under the lights. This special evening also included activities with the football players and cheerleaders, as well as light refreshments.

Event organizer, middle school reading teacher Candace Donaldson, said members of the football team and cheer squad were excited to make this an annual event.

“Finding ways to make reading fun and enjoyable makes any reading teacher happy. Watching the connections that happen during the night is my favorite part. The students are so excited to read with their cheerleader or football player and look up to them as a mentor role,” she explained. “Making connections between athletics and education is a win-win in my book.”

Red Raider varsity football coach Ryan Donldson said this event has become a beloved tradition for his players, who are excited to meet their young fans and share an evening of fun and reading with them.

“It’s always great to see the high school football players and cheerleaders participate in this event with the younger generation during Read with a Raider Night. Each year, we make it a goal to give back to others in any way possible. So, this event definitely checks that box, and is enjoyed by all participants,” explained Coach Donaldson. “It’s nice to see the team taking on a positive role, but in a different environment with the youth, away from the practice and game fields. I’m looking forward to this year’s event being the best one yet!”
