Sixth Sense team performs well in annual competition
After three days of intense competition, Palmerton’s team achieved fourth place in the annual Sixth Sense competition that was held from April 8-10, 2024, at Northwestern Lehigh School District. Sixth Sense is an academic competition held for school districts in parts of Carbon, Lehigh and Monroe counties. Each district has a team made up of six, sixth-grade students. School districts that participated this year were Palmerton, Lehighton, Tamaqua, Pleasant Valley, Panther Valley, Northern Lehigh, Jim Thorpe and Northwestern Lehigh.
This year’s Palmerton team members included Sophia Hedes and Lorah Marks from Towamensing Elementary School and Lucas Beahn, Jace Farkas, Harper Hahn and Matt Jahelka from S. S. Palmer Elementary School. Palmerton’s sixth grade students took a test in the fall to help determine the team. Advisors also consulted with teachers to select the final team members. Once the team was formed, they started having weekly practices so that students would understand how the matches would be run and how the buzzers worked.
“We are so proud of the students on our team this year. They worked hard in practices and did so well during what can be a very stressful competition,” said Monique Hofford and Deanna Iles, Sixth Sense co-advisors and teachers at S. S. Palmer Elementary School.
