Secondary student course registration for the 2023-2024 school year is underway with a fresh new look, more courses than ever (426) and five condensed pathways.

“I can’t say enough about our information technology (IT) department and the work they do with the district’s online program of studies,” said Dr. Matt McKinley, assistant superintendent of 7-12 instruction. “They have been phenomenal, and what I think you will now find on our website is very user friendly.”

Completely developed and maintained in-house by the Seneca Valley (SV) IT Department, a revised program of studies (POS) can now be found under the District’s Academic channel on the homepage. The POS features summaries and detailed curriculum for K-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12 courses that are offered in traditional and cyber settings.

The District is also pleased to announce that they are expanding their partnership with Robert Morris University (RMU) and offering four new College-in-High-School (CHS) courses, which includes CHS Financial Accounting, CHS Managerial Accounting, CHS Diverse Voices in U.S. History and CHS Narrative Film Production. These, and the other 35+ CHS courses at SV, allow students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit by completing these courses while in high school, a wonderful, two-fold benefit. Students can take CHS courses and challenge themselves while also enjoying a cost savings as most CHS courses at SV are free. The district is also expanding the CHS Biology course to also serve as an Advanced Placement (AP) course, which gives students options for this advanced level of study.

Other new opportunities found in the POS are the products of the district’s ongoing team efforts to stay on top of the evolution of the workplace and the world, and adjusting what is offered accordingly, as seen in the three new secondary courses for the 2023-24 school year:
• Introduction to Accounting
• Dance Explorations
• CHS Healthcare Concepts and Medical Terminology

The district also pleased to announce that the program of studies will also now list all special education courses with course descriptions. To contain all the academics noted above, the district is presenting a leaner, more definitive group of five career pathways, a change from the original 16 pathways and career clusters.

“These combinations are related to and complement one another,” explained Dr. McKinley. “Students are encouraged to pick a pathway that matches their abilities, skills, and interests. And they can change pathways at any time and as often as needed.”

The five SV Career Pathways are:
• Arts, Communication & Media
• Business, Management & Information Technology
• Education, Public Safety & Law
• Health, Medical & Human Services
• Industry, Engineering & Technology
