Trunk-or-Treat builds community

West York Area High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) students hosted their annual Trunk-or-Treat on the evening of October 20, 2022. The event was a tremendous success, with over 1,200 attendees and 40 “trunks” participating.

Offering a safe and fun trick-or-treat experience, Trunk-or-Treat was open not only to the West York community but also to neighboring communities. According to NHS advisor Ms. Melissa Carl, the event is designed to “Create a fun, community-wide event that brings together groups and buildings from across the district and builds school spirit. The community sees the range of school teams and groups for students.” Under the direction of Advisors Ms. Carl and Ms. Shannon Brown, each of the 41 NHS students heads up a committee to make the event happen, learning skills such as leadership, long-range planning, organization, creative problem-solving, and logistics. It’s a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun. Generous donations from faculty, staff, and the community are vital to the success of the event.

The event, which takes place in the high school parking lot, also offers entertainment and games, and this year, the elementary PTO brought in food trucks for the evening. Nine years and going strong, everyone is already looking forward to next year!
