Revamped summer school brings more engagement

Harrisburg School District is making good use of federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to retool its summer school program — not just as a credit recovery program for high school students, but for those at every level.

According to an article by CBS News, the revamp included bringing in an extended learning director, Dr. Danielle Curzi, to create more engaging programs. The results include a Super Readers Camp and a Wonders Camp that incorporated academic skills and social-emotional ones. Students are grouped based on skill and receive one-on-one time with teachers.

Dr. Curzi and the district are currently planning after-school programs to start in the fall that will continue to progress made this summer.
