North Star students weigh and seal meal packages

On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, North Star Middle School held a Rise Against Hunger event with over 50 students participating in filling and packing bags of dry, nutrient-rich food for people in need across the world. Rise Against Hunger is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to end world hunger by providing aid to vulnerable communities throughout our world. Joe Kelly, the community engagement manager for Rise Against Hunger, did an awesome job of setting up all of the needed supplies with our custodial staff as well as instructing our students on what to do. We also could not have done this without the gracious donation of over $300 from Kanter United Methodist Church.

Mr. Stanko, who put together this event, is the seventh grade World History teacher and Student Council advisor at the middle school. Of the event, he said, “It was such a rewarding experience to be involved with a hands-on event knowing the impact I was having. I felt a sense of community by being around other people who also want to help make a difference. Rise Against Hunger made the event fun for the kids by playing music and using a gong to signal each time they packed one thousand bags of food. My hope and prayer is that students realize the impact they were making today by preparing 5,000 meals.”
