Simmons Elementary School’s autistic support teachers and Horsham Police Department have been collaborating in a community partnership for Autism Awareness Month. Small groups of police officers have been visiting Simmons to join students’ social skills groups and participate in activities.

The goal of the project is to help Horsham’s first responders learn more about people with autism and to understand how to effectively interact with children with sensory needs. Through this project, students are able to have positive interactions with officers and learn about their roles in the community. Three visits occurred in April and one in May.
